The BFI Filmography is a web based tool to explore the archive of UK feature films data from the beginning of film history until now. The BFI wanted to make this rich information easily accessible and compelling to researchers, film buffs and the general public. I helped create the user experience including data analysis, proof of concept prototypes, UI design and data visualisations.
There was a massive data set to work with which the devs formatted into a usable spreadsheet so that we could begin to analyse it. To gain further understanding of the data I took part in a number of workshops with BFI key stakeholders who knew the info and target audience inside out.
Collaboratively we mapped common themes occurring within each film’s data, such as the people and companies involved in its making, year of release, genre, and more. Creating a logical hierarchy in which people would search for information.

Collaboratively we mapped common themes occurring within each film’s data, such as the people and companies involved in its making, year of release, genre, and more. Creating a logical hierarchy in which people would search for information.
There were three standout themes running throughout which formed the primary filters. Film (the film name itself), Roles (key roles and departments) and People (cast and crew).
A powerful second level filter was created to allow deeper investigation of the data which included Time and Gender. This filter enabled deeper, more compelling stories to be uncovered, whilst providing unique insights into UK film history such as ‘How has the gender split in film changed over time?’
Getting the UI right was key to the project so I researched the best types of data visualisations to communicate the results, and we used a rapid-prototyping approach with designers and developers working together closely. This allowed us to quickly test ideas and iterate on the designs with real data.
Currently housing over 10,000 films the BFI Filmography is a scalable site that grows the more British films are made.
